Dave Garwood

Dave’s first musical interest was as a choirboy in the local parish church. He started piano lessons at the age of 10 but then decided it would the tuba that took over and the piano lessons were dropped. (Silly – should have carried on with both!) Joined the Army in 1962 as a Junior Bandsman in the 3rd East Anglian Regiment on Bb Bass and then, when old enough joined the Regimental Band stationed in Ballykinler, County Down, Northern Ireland and euphonium was now the instrument. In 1968 he transferred to the Staff Band of the Royal Army Medical Corps playing euphonium, trombone, alto sax and a spell on bass drum. Dave attended the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall for one year in 1966/7, and it was during this time that he started playing with the Chobham Band. After leaving the Army in 1976 and a spell with the British Airways Brass Band returned to Bisley.
