I have always enjoyed listening to music but never had an opportunity to learn to read or play. In my late 50s someone handed me a euphonium and said have a go at learning that. I joined Slinfold Concert Band and progressed slowly. Following the death of my late husband in 2012 I put the instrument in the loft until in 2014 I attended a Bisley Band concert where I was persuaded by an enthusiastic trombone player to attend a learners and improvers group. I have been with Almac Bisley Brass Band since then and am still enjoying learning. The euphonium parts in the brass band are far more complicated than in the concert band and have far fewer rests so present a greater challenge but with help and encouragement are eventually achievable.
