Following yesterday’s post, here are a few words from Alastair about his experience of joining the band.
“I learned to play trumpet at school and played cornet with the local schools’ band and the British Rail band. Loved it, but gave up when I moved away to college. Brass bands were just happy memories for thirty years until moving to West End. I had heard the Almac Bisley band at local fêtes, and, seeing a poster advert for ‘refresher courses’ for past players, got in touch….
“I found it easy to pick up playing again, now on tenor horn, and found the other players extremely friendly, welcoming and supportive. Great to be part of a musical team again, where musical standards are challenging but not intimidating. The band is very much for the local community, and I have particularly enjoyed the atmosphere at our concerts at Bisley Village Hall.
“Covid has proved a challenge: we have missed rehearsing and performing together and have sadly lost a couple of players. However we are now restarting rehearsals for summer concerts planned in Bisley, West End and Guildford. We are also relaunching our tuition, so if you are looking for a new challenge after lockdown and fancy playing a brass instrument, whether you have played before or not, get in touch!”
